Based on the BBC sitcom, starring the inimitable Frankie Howerd, Laughing Monkey are very pleased (not to mention tittered!) to bring Miles Tredinnick's new adaptation of this seventies classic to the Puppet Theatre stage in 2012.
It's a hard life for a slave in Pompeii, 79 A.D. ...
More often than not Lurcio finds himself keeping his owner's family members apart, in order to keep them together: Nausius, a wet and wimpy son; Ammonia, a wife with a rather impressive bosom and a rather insatiable appetite; Erotica, a naïve daughter; and Ludicrus Sextus himself, a lecherous and lustful, but terribly lazy senator. If that wasn't enough to have him begging to be thrown to the lions, he also finds himself contending with the machinations of ambitious footman Corneous; the brutal Captain Treacherus and his sidekick Kretinus, on the hunt for an escaped slave; and the bawdy advances of good-time girl Suspenda ...
With Vesuvius rumbling in the distance and the gloomy predictions of Senna the Soothsayer foretelling doom and woe, will Lurcio ever be allowed to complete his prologue?
